Lots of ideas

So, I listened to what you guys said about the poster and made the name bigger and right aligned it.  I like the bigger name but I am not a fan of the right align.  I think it balanced it on the left.

This is what I started to think for the layout.  A big mirror in the middle.  The cameras over it on a shelf.  The posters on either side.   Haven't decided order or anything like that.  Just threw it all together.

I was thinking about using an image sort of like this (obviously not on my kitchen table and no glare) of everyday items that we always use with the stickers on it.  This will explain, without using ANY words (since everything else is text oriented) how to use the stickers in everyday life.

I like the idea of the share the sticker one with just an image and no text too.  If I get the right image the message will be conveyed without needing the text.

Instead of having another poster with the explanation of what to do with the mirror I liked the idea of just putting the text straight on the mirror.  That way the viewer becomes the image of the piece and it solves my problem of not wanting to use a "stock image girl" and the viewer picturing themselves when they read.

I want to show you ideas for sizes for the stickers and a business card idea.  I can't post the business card for some reason.

New Edited Statement

Societies standards influence our way of everyday life, through our language, through what is available for us to buy, and how it is presented to us. Did you ever think that controlling the colors around us could influence how we perceive everything? It makes us grab that really ripe apple, that bright orange, orange, or that box of organic or low-fat granola bars. Did you know the colors of these products influence what we buy? It begs us to question how and why, it begs for us to know the truth.

This project exposes how color can affect us emotionally, physically, and psychologically. It influences what we buy, from food to cars. It can make us feel happy, sad, angry and even hungry. Color can persuade us, and manipulate our senses.

Color is important to our sense of sight; its how we describe things, its what we see first. We rely so much on color to identify things its hard to imagine not seeing certain colors, and how much it would really affect us. Color is so important to us as a society that we understand the meanings of color within society at a subconscious level create. Over time we have come to naturally live by these constructed ideas associated with color. These subconscious meanings are so embedded into our brains we don’t think twice about what the truth really is, and why we desire the granola bars with the green label over the one with the blue label.

installation ideas

So, I am also trying to consider some ideas for how my work will well, work in the gallery. I haven't mentioned it to Josh yet, but if the two of us were taking the back corners, what if we had benches, or better yet Arm chairs and a lamp or something, like a little reading room where people could browse the various books (yours too Jessica!)

Other than that, I am trying to come up with ways to make it interactive. I realize that getting people to read even a small portion of a book at an opening is asking an awful lot. So aside from having a little bookshelf with multiple copies of the book, I'm toying with some activity ideas.

Since the book is about relativity in some respects, I am interested in finding a way that viewers could mark a copy of the book, showing what they personally agreed with or didn't agree with, or maybe even a way to respond to the book. The responses could become a part of the installation, which would display the fact that each person has a different mix of influences which makes for different opinions.

The first way I thought of was: what if there is a copy of the book with a highlighter attached or some other way of marking the book where viewers could mark what they agreed and disagreed with? That may be asking too much also though I'm afraid.

Quick question:

Hey guys, I think one page of writing for each prompt I have is not going to be enough. I feel like I will be able to communicate more information, plus the book will be longer as I think it may look a little thin, more like a Communication Arts magazine than a book (of course, everyone always says when they see a Comm Arts mag, "wow, that's like a book!" but their paper is also thinner than what I may be using).

So I know these are rough, the information is just some of the text I have used over and over again, but I'm wondering if you think this sort of layout would work?

Everything on white, in the smaller font, would be about the prompt specifically and then everything on the gray (or whatever color I choose) would be the main content. The flow would basically be the same just a spread or a front and back page between each instead of the one-to-one ratio.
Do you think this would be problematic?

Not complete yet, but I like her!

Stuff to put in show?

This one would obviously have a better picture in it.

This needs to be arranged better I just am not sure how yet.

This would be the SS poster for the whole show.

Disclaimer

ROUGH beginnings of a possible disclaimer to have outside the gallery?

“Parts of this Exhibition feature nudity, surgical scarring, and mild profanity. All text and images that contain nudity or profanity were created in the context of the individual work and do not intend to offend viewers. Nudity and profanity are not used lightly in this Show; we seek in every sense to educate and inform viewers and to fulfill the goal of our Exhibition as a whole.”

* I think it would be kind of cool to say something like, “This warning is given in the event that these topics make you uncomfortable. However, we ask that you give it a chance; after all, this exhibit is about behavior and identity and, in many cases, challenging societal norms.” That might sound too uppity, but worth a shot, right? =]

"I hope to impact lives by sparking conversations with society, questioning social conventions and restraints. My show generates knowledge through the visual representation of the deconstruction of society’s stereotypes."

I feel like this is a strong, important couple of sentences that I'd also like to include somewhere in my statement. What do you think?

layout ideas

Hey guys, here is an idea I came up for my layout. The paintings themselves are to scale, in that the middle row is composed of all the 8" x 10", and the top and bottom are all the 10" x 8", with 8 inches between every painting. The total number of paintings is my goal for how many I want to have, and the question marks signify what I think may be reaching the limits of infeasible.

The three shapes at the bottom are stands on which I plan to place my books. Granted, the space between books and the stands (and the size of the stands themselves) is not to scale, but you get the idea.

Let me know what you guys think.

Statement

Hey guys - I edited my statement a bit. The second to last paragraph in particular is new. I'm still including the last paragraph (the one with the special thanks), I just didn't include it in this post. Let me know what ya think.

What does it mean to modify something? We all know that, in the general sense, to modify something is to alter it. But what does it mean to Modify a person? Exactly the same thing. To be a Modified person, to take part in body modification, one simply has to undergo an alteration that wouldn’t occur on its own. In a broad sense, Body Modification encompasses nearly everything we may do in our daily lives – spritzing ourselves with perfume or cologne, washing ourselves with soap to alter the smells our body naturally adopts after a long day, shaving, wearing contacts or glasses, using nail polish, wearing makeup, using a hearing aid, coloring our hair…the list is endless. Participating in any of these or similar actions makes you part of the vast Body Modification world. Whether you choose to actively engage in and identify yourself as a member of this community is a different story.

While trimming one’s nails and wearing contacts are definite examples of Body Modification, the term “Body Modification” is more commonly used to refer to alterations such as tattooing, piercing, and the like. Common daily activities are no different in terms of principle than getting a piercing or a tattoo, yet tattooed and pierced people are often viewed by many as completely different from themselves, members of a mysterious, sophomoric subculture. Indeed, there are reckless, immature members of the Body Modification community, but what group doesn’t have its oddballs? The members of the Body Modification world are as varied in personality and outlook on life as the members of any other group. Assuming that every Modified person leads the same lifestyle is like assuming that every person with the same skin color shares the same outlook on life.

My paintings illustrate not only the beauty of several Modified people, but also the humanity that exists in each of these amazing, intelligent individuals. This book, which had its conception as a supplemental element, truly took on a life of its own and stands as veritable proof of how very different each person is. It is complete with photos of each person’s Modifications, insightful interviews, and other important elements. The interviews demonstrate the fact that each person has a very different lifestyle and outlook on life. The only things consistently shared by the people featured in my show are intelligence, altered bodies, and open-mindedness.

Before starting each painting, I familiarized myself with the person who I was about to paint. I studied their interviews and tried to get to know them as much as I could in a given period of time. How could I hope to truthfully convey each person’s unique and beautiful identity without knowing him or her first? The emotion that unabashedly surfaces in each painting is another sign of the fact that simply because a Modified person may look physically different, he or she still experiences the same emotions, fears, and desires as a person whose body lacks piercings or tattoos. To discriminate against a person upon seeing his or her full sleeve tattoo or stretched ears is no better than discriminating against a person because of his or her skin color, sexual orientation, or gender.

Each painting is the same size, an intimate 8” x 10”. This compact size lends an intimacy to each rendering while still allowing enough room for necessary detail. There are no determinate backgrounds to my paintings, allowing viewers to focus on what is important – the People. The figures themselves are also decidedly lacking color, only a bit of peach, red, or yellow visible in the faces and hands. The color, a vital element in my show, is instead reserved for the true stars of my show, the Modifications themselves.

As I did each painting, I remembered the conversation that we had as I took photos of him or her. I reflected on the words we shared, the way I felt, and the way we interacted. I thought about the tendency we have to let a single conversation or even a single glance define our perception of someone and the fact that the perception we form about someone after a five-minute verbal exchange is but a small, infinitesimal facet of who a person truly is. We could choose to be weak and let our first impressions, not just of modified people, but of everyone we meet, define our opinions, or we can demand control of our perceptions and thoughts, forcing ourselves to look deeper and realize that a person cannot be defined by a single act, a single encounter, or a single tattoo.

I don’t expect that every person who views my show will instantly shed all pre-conceived notions that they may have held about Modified people. However, it is my hope that all who view my show will question these pre-conceived notions. I will consider my show a success if viewers are able to see the beauty in some Modifications in which they previously saw pointlessness or ignorance. My show will succeed if its viewers realize that there is so much more to the Body Modification world than meets the eye, growing closer to accepting it for the art form that it is.

Another amazing video

I dont know how many of you are getting the chance to watch the videos I have been posting, but if you only watch one, this is the one. I almost cried, it was so powerful.

A Son asked his father, "Dad, will you take part in a marathon with me?" The father who, despite having a heart condition, says "Yes". They went on to complete the marathon together. Father and son went on to join other marathons. The father always saying "Yes" to his son's request of going through the race together. One day, the son asked his fater, "Dad, let's join the Ironman together."

To which, his father said "Yes".

For those who don't know, Ironman is the toughest triathlon ever. The race encompasses three endurance events of a 2.4 mile (3.86 kilometer) ocean swim, followed by a 112 mile (180.2 kilometer) bike ride and ending with a 26.2 mile (42.195 kilometer) marathon along the coast of the Big Island.

Father and son went on to complete the race together!

“To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift” - Pre

Running is the perfect metaphor for life. Within both, one faces great adversity, and great success. The path ahead maybe right in front of us, and other times we make out own way. There is a beginning, and also an end. The body, mind and soul are all and always tested. Steve “Pre”fontaine's quote stated above, arguably his most memorable, touches upon the same thing that running and life represent, and each is that gift. As humans, with have the gracious gift of both, the ability to live, and the ability to run, each helping the other in countless ways. We only receive one chance of life, and thus we should not waste any second of it with the mundane or redundancy of the modern day trials. We challenge ourselves to overcome them, and also face other dreams, wishes, and even hurdles that are in our way, no matter big or small. We should live in the hope that at the end of the day, life, we can proudly say without blemish or regret, “I have finished the race.”

This year long running log is my starting point in tying the connection between the two entities, and representing a means for anyone, no matter the skill level or experience in running, to have a way of tracking their progress and to push themselves to limits far beyond than what they can imagine. My goal was to highlight what running is, and how each person can identify and define their own meaning, for such like life, each person is their own and unique perspective and experience, so each moment will be different for the user. There is no such thing as the perfect training log of how to run, but this log is different in a way that it approaches running, or life. Throughout the pages is a quote, inspiration piece, or fact about running, and how it touches upon the pillars of human experience and levels of enlightenment. The user gains insight of their own identity, sharing moments and understanding the community around them, and also touching upon the higher levels of spirituality. All of these can be approached to be answered by the means of running. This log by no means holds the answers, but only proposes the question. All you have to do to find these answers is run.

Hey guys - I tried to do some rough outlines for business cards that seem less business-oriented and more art-centric.

The matte aqua "fine artist" looks odd here, but I was thinking of it as being in foil, just can't show that on Word. I'll bring the card samples I was talking about to class tomorrow to better illustrate what I'm envisioning.

My only reservation about using my art on my business card is that pretty much all I paint is human figures, and I didn't know if people would assume that I'm either Jared or Joe haha.

Hey guys,
I went on another picture taking excursion in Franklinton and downtown and thought this shot might work for an idea for an alternate postcard. Any thoughts?

Revised cards + new ones

Here are some more ideas for my business cards. Most of the ones in the first screen shot were in the last post I made about business cards, but I edited some of them with the suggestions that Deanna made. I played around with the gray bar and boldness, font sizes, etc. to emphasize my name. I do agree with Deanna that the script in the first card does look kind of wedding-appropriate =/ my eye keeps going back to that one, though! I tried a different script in the second card.

The ones in the second screen shot are newer.

Let me know what you guys think. As I said before, my Photoshop isn't working (ughhh sweet frustration...), so these are just rough sketches done in Word, I know there are some annoying booboos in there. I want to try to choose a final layout and get it finalized in Photoshop or Illustrator by the end of this week so I can order it on 4colorprint.com.

The more I look at the second set that I did...I'm really not liking the script..but oh well. Still give me your thoughts please =]

At its core, my show is about people. Fittingly, its completion would not have been possible without the help of many very special ones. My sincerest thanks go out in no small part to the following people: Jared Anderson, Jessica Beckett, Sarvas Berry, Dawn Bryan, Whitney Brewer, Ryan Chitwood, Tabatha Deavers, Jessica Larva, Jennifer Michael, Joe Morissey, Justina Nnajiofor, Colin O’Shaughnessy, Joe Stevens, Michael Szall, Deanna Taylor, Drew Townsend, Amanda Wamprecht, Josh Watson, and various other people who did not directly participate in my show but who have inspired me in countless ways.

COLOR!

Here are some shots of my experimentation with adding color to the backgrounds of my paintings. I still wanted to keep with the idea of nondescript backgrounds, emphasizing the fact that the figures themselves are the important part. The colors are much more vibrant in person; the vibrancy doesn't translate well in these pics. I think the most successful one is the first photo in the last row, the one of Jared with a turquoise/aqua background. The fact that his face already has such a vibrant color on it made it easy to choose a complementary (not to be confused with complimentary) color for the background. Some of the others were more of a challenge, and I still plan on re-working most of them. But overall, I'm happy with the change from black and gray backgrounds to more colorful ones.

Thoughts?

Hey guys, Blogger is kindly not allowing me to post individual pictures today, but I found a way to send images to our blog via text!! How awesome. So instead of making seven separate blog posts with a single image each, I just took a picture of all the stuff I've been working on. That should suffice until Blogger decides to let me post images again =]

This is what some of my stuff looks like after adding background colors. The colors are pretty vibrant, but that doesn't translate through this photo very well.

Color?

Before break, I mentioned starting to incorporate color into the backgrounds of my paintings. Before I move on to adding color bgs to other paintings, what do you guys think of this one?

Business card ideas

Hey guys - here are some of my very ROUGH sketches for business cards. I say "very" rough because they're done in Microsoft Word..my Photoshop Elements has conveniently decided to not open..it starts to load and then says "The application Photoshop Elements 4.0 has unexpectedly quit." Even more troubling, when I click on "details" to see what the problem might be, it says that a necessary agent is missing...not sure what to do about that....but for the time being, these sketches should suffice.

I also REALLY REALLY REALLY want to get spot uv on the card I end up choosing. I can show you guys what that looks like on the samples I got from 4colorprint.com. It basically looks like a watermark and really adds flair without looking cluttered or immature.

I know the "J"s are cut off on the first two sketches, I'm not sure why, because it looks completely fine when printed.

These are all FRONTS. I plan on having the back blank (1. because it costs extra for a designed back, 2. because I like the idea of a blank back).

As far as some of the sweeping blank spaces (like the huge gap on the fourth card in the second row), I envisioned a logo or image there, incorporating my initials? Below are some sketches I did, attempting to combine J and B in various ways. Also, if I want to use one of these logos, but want to make it more subtle, I could use it as the spot uv printing, which I mentioned above.

What do you guys think about including "painting, drawing, textiles, etc.." ?? Most of the business cards of fine and visual artists (that I've seen) include their area of emphasis..obviously painting is what I consider my emphasis, but I thought I'd include some other strong points in there.

Also, I used the same color of green that I used on my CV.

I also thought about doing a European size or cocktail size card...long, narrow card and square card, respectively. Different size cards stand out from the bunch but I suppose could also be perceived as presumptuous...thoughts?

What do you guys think about these?

Suggestions/advice?

As far as take aways go for the show, I have a couple ideas, and I'd really like to go with both:

1. I obviously want to have business cards to hand out; I'm working on that right now through THIS site. I ordered samples from their site and received them in the mail over break. If anyone is interested in seeing what they have to offer, I can bring the samples to class.

2. I'd LOVE to make some custom temporary tattoos to hand out. I've found a couple sites that offer such a service (kind of expensive, but hey, gotta do what ya gotta do), but I'm not sure what I actually want to be ON the tattoos. Any suggestions???

My attempt at my Artist Statement

Have you ever thought of how societies standards have influenced your way of everyday life, through our language, what you buy, and how you perceive everything? Did you ever think a simple color could influence how you perceive everything? It makes you grab that really ripe apple, that bright orange, orange, or that box of organic or low-fat granola bars. Did you know the colors of these products influence what you buy? It begs you to question how & why, it begs for you to know what the truth really is. Why buy the reddest apple in the bunch? Are oranges really that orange? Are the organic, low-fat products better?

My senior thesis is to expose this to you. Show you how color can affect you emotionally, physically, and psychologically. It influences what you buy, need it be food or a car. It can make you feel happy, sad, angry and even hungry. Color can persuade us, and manipulate our senses.

Color is important to your sense of sight; it’s in your descriptions of things, its what you see first. You rely so much on color to identify things could you imagine not seeing certain colors, and how that may affect you? Color is so important to us as a society, so much so that society has made certain colors subconsciously create meanings that we as a society have come to naturally live by over the years. These subconscious meanings are so embedded into our brains we don’t think twice about what the truth really is, and how come you prefer the granola bars with the green label than the one with the blue?

Artist Statement... kinda

This is my first draft and I sort of just spilled all my thoughts on a page so thats why it may not make sense.  Sorry I am bombarding the blog but I didn't get to do anything fun for Spring Break. :(

When you see an unappealing picture of yourself it is easy to delete it so that it never has to be seen again.  Don’t Delete Yourself is about avoiding the delete button.  The delete button is the enemy and allows you to write yourself as unworthy of the person you are or who you are meant to be.  The delete button takes the power away from you.  Only you can define the person you are or who you want to be, not a button.  Don’t rely on the button for your happiness.

Don’t Delete Yourself is a new age ‘love yourself’ movement.  It allows people who are insecure with the way they look or who they are, to come together and lift each other up.  This empowers the young people of today so that the young people of tomorrow will be able to love ourselves more than we ever did.  We let so many things and people tear us down or tear us apart so that we aren’t even the same person anymore.  Makeup to cover up our imperfections and secrets to cover up our stories is not a way to live.  It needs to stop.

People who are not happy with the person they are easily write themselves off as unworthy of happiness, love, and much more.  Don’t Delete Yourself is something that is near and dear to my heart because for years I was unhappy with the way that I looked because I was different from all of my friends.  I was taller than the boys in my class; I had curves, freckles and red hair.  None of my friends could relate to me so I thought that I was unworthy of the amazing things in life.  That’s not a way to live and defiantly not a way to love.

I wanted to learn to love myself so that my future children and the people who look up to me can love themselves too.  I want to be a role model to so many beautiful girls who are dubbed “different”.  Don’t Delete Yourself is for role models and future role models.  Don’t Delete Yourself if for you.

our cards

Hi All,
If we are going to get these printed ASAP, I wanted to make sure we were finished with the designs.  I wasn't sure both of them were completely finished at the end of class.

Due to the finishing issues, I wanted to ask which way we should go with this.  The top card steals some of the design from the bottom card so it's more of a hybrid.

Should we go with the top card?  Let me know.  I'll get them printed when I hear back from most of the class.  I would like this to be a group decision.

-Jessica

randomerraticcrazystatementideasblahhh

This is obviously not cohesive yet, in any form, but here are some of the brainstorms and ramblings I've come up with thus far.

I don’t expect my visual documentation of modified people to end with the culmination of Under the Influence. I plan to continue.

There is more individual variation WITHIN a group than BETWEEN groups, the people represented in this show are just as varied in personality and outlook on life as you are from anyone else. Their one commonality is modifications. Passing judgment on a modified person solely because of his or her modifications is no different than passing judgment on a person because of his or her sexual orientation, skin color, religion, or ethnicity. Modified people do not CHOOSE to be modified – they do it because it is who they are meant to be.

Their personal testaments will show you that it is unfair and completely incorrect to make pre-conceived judgments about lifestyle, religion, etc. based on the fact that they have tattoos, piercings, and other modifications.

Even MY view of modified people has changed as a result of this show and interviewing people, learning more about the lives of these kind, beautiful people.

It is not my belief, nor do I hope, that every person who views my show will instantly shed all pre-conceived notions that they may hold about heavily pierced or tattoo people. It is my hope, however, that all who view my show will question these pre-conceived notions, learn to not judge others (all “others,” not just people with tattoos and piercings) based on physical appearance.
Just because you don’t see tattoos or piercings, doesn’t mean someone isn’t covered in ink or metal underneath their clothing. A nurse with full sleeve tattoos. A teacher with stretched ear lobes. A doctor who attends suspension shows in her spare time.

Tattoos and piercings are readily-accepted parts of life in many developed countries around the world. So why do so many people in the United States, one of the most developed countries in the world, have a problem accepting this? Having tattoos, piercings, and other modifications does NOT make a person any less intelligent than a person who has no modifications. Just as the LACK of modifications does not make a person any more intelligent than a person with heavy modifications.

The era in which tattoos and piercings were the sole territory of sailors and criminals is over.
This is a lesson not only in promoting body modification, but in promoting acceptance of all people who may be physically unlike ourselves.

When people view these works, there is often a sense of discomfort or aversion. These works sometimes depict body alterations with which most people are not familiar and, as a result, not comfortable. However, despite the fact that viewers often feel an initial repugnance to the modifications, they are drawn back again and again because of the subconscious connection they feel to the person in the painting. Sometimes the figure boasts a confident aura, other times an uncertain and self-conscious demeanor, but viewers always end up coming back to read more into the person and his or her modifications. My works unlock the oft forgotten and rarely touched quality in humanity nowadays – Empathy. In my works, viewers recognize very basic emotions, like fear, confidence, reluctance, or humility, and they subconsciously call to mind an instance in which they felt a similar emotion, and they realize that these people, sometimes vastly different from themselves physically, are more like them than they think. At this point, discriminations dissolve and fall away, making way for a purely connective emotional experience. My hope with these most recent works is that even a fraction of this understanding and empathy will remain with the viewer long after.

These works focus less on background detail – indeed the background is nearly ignored altogether! – to hone in on what I believe is truly important in understanding people in everyday life – faces. The face is a means of universal interaction, communicating emotion when we want it to be shared, and sometimes when we do not. Although the face is indeed part of us, working in conjunction with who we are, it sometimes betrays us. I find this fascinating.

Artist Statement:

The historic neighborhood of Franklinton is a diverse, evolving community with a rich heritage. It was established in 1797 and the first settlement in Ohio. It has endured devastating floods and poverty, both of which have stigmatized the outsider's perspective of this promising neighborhood. Most of the references that I have had throughout my life, in regard to Franklinton, have been negative. My research into the neighborhood has allowed me to reveal many positive aspects to Franklinton.

The floodwall construction in 1994 has paved the way for revitalization through new construction and renovation. My initial interest began with my passion for architecture and concern when neglect and decay occur. My direction evolved into a social awareness campaign focused on the impact that community support has on maintaining and revitalizing a neighborhood.

My objective is to highlight some of the positive aspects to this community with the goal to revise the negative image associated with the historic neighborhood of Franklinton.

What this work is about Preface
This book seeks to engage the reader. Beyond lifting the words from the pages, it’s hoped that the various exercises, juxtapositions and questions will allow you to contemplate not only the nature of what is going on in the outside world, but your role within it. In reality this book is about thinking. It occurs, to me, that the only way to progress as a species is to think about thinking— at least every once in awhile. Many of the problems in modern society, indeed even in ancient societies, seem to stem from a lack of understanding about what is really occurring at a given place and time. We all have that impulsive friend, but how much of what we, the human race, has done has been much more than impulsive? Sure, the great inventions, the aqueduct, the light bulb, the wheel, and the long list of things which moved the human race’s ability to prosper forward, came from long deliberation on what was wrong with the way things are. However, it seems that most of the things we all cringe about, war, murder, all forms of hate and prejudice, would have been avoided had their perpetrators simply considered the problems they faced a little longer. In fact, this is implied in the very word prejudice. Pre- Judging. Judging before. Before what? Before thinking, before facts, before analysis.
One of the things we very rarely consider, and understandably—it’s hard to conceive of, is what we are doing in terms of the big picture. What are our reasons for the way culture and society function? Who decided them and who decides them now? Well, this book is here to argue that our language decides them. Thinking about thinking, thinking about the way we think, requires us to recognize the simple fact that we think largely in language; for those reading this, English. It would make perfect sense that few of us have considered this fact in any depth as most of us begin to learn to speak and communicate in English as near-infants and learn to visualize (read and write) it as toddlers. It is ingrained in us before we have the capacity to question it. Language as a whole has been the most influential construction to the progress of the human race. Without language, there would be no passing of learned information. Without language each of us would all still be figuring out the wheel for ourselves right now, unless of course we were lucky enough to witness someone else do it and adequately able to copy their actions without any guidance, including hand motions, grunts and eye-rolls. So, how many of us have stopped and thought about how we use language? Not just, how we structure sentences and define words, but how we relate to them, how they influence our perceptions and therefore our actions. Perhaps the real question to ask is, How are our actions a product of our language?

Chapter One Introduction A Definition of Terms A Brief Survey of the Arts and Sciences How did We Get Here?
The notion of “Objective Reality” is archaic, but no one seems to know it yet.
What follows in this book is a path towards a new definition of the human configuration. We must redefine our view of ourselves if we are to make a significant move forward in our species evolutionary process/progress. No longer are we, human beings, separate entities who have the authority to define and organize the rest of reality into some concept of “the outside world.” THE OUTSIDE WORLD IS INSIDE US.
Over the past two hundred years, nearly all of the sciences have rejected the notion of “objective reality” or “provable truth.” Einstein and the quantum physicists showed that our scientific measurements of the world are entirely pre-defined by our relationship to the subject being measured.

ARTIST STATEMENT.

FUCK BREAST CANCER.

I’m sorry if the profanity might offend you, but I see no reason to censor a word that fully expresses how I and the many others feel about this life altering cancer. I do not have breast cancer, but unfortunately I have lost many loved ones to this disease. Over the years I have felt a sense of disconnection with the pink ribbon. We all know and are very aware that October is breast cancer awareness month. How could we NOT be aware? We are automatically drowning in a sea of pink that floods your local schools, malls, grocery stores, athletics, television, fast food chains, and ext. EVERYTHING turns into pink and as this color transition is happening, pink turns itself into an industry. It has evolved into such a marketing opportunity for big businesses over the years to the point where it makes a profit from our own ignorance, and our own pain. This is when we need to stop and peel back the pink sugar coating on breast cancer.

Don't get me wrong--the Susan Komen foundation and other organizations who use the pink ribbon as a tool to stimulate fund raising for research and support is wonderful. And I know there are women out there who see the pink ribbon as a source of strength and inspiration. So I don't want to take away from the power of the symbol for others.

But that’s not for me.

It has never been and never will be my go to source because I am unable to embrace that type of mentality. I’m just one of the many that feel this way too. That is exactly why I was driven to create the “fuck breast cancer” campaign. I did my research and found that no matter how many walks you participate in, how many pink Campbell soup cans you collect, how many times you fly on the pink delta airplane during October, how many pink buckets of chicken you consume, or how many pink hats and wigs you wear, at the end of the day women and men are still dieing from this disease.
I didn’t create this with any intention of censoring breast cancer with another colored ribbon. In fact, it was created to UNCENSOR the true reality of breast cancer and UNMASK the pink blind fold that we hold over our eyes. Because no specific color, or symbol will ever truly justify someone’s pain, especially when it is someone who is on the front lines battling breast cancer head on. FUCK BREAST CANCER is an outlet for that pain. It’s okay to be pissed off at this cancer, you should be. That’s why I’ve summed it up in three little words and a middle finger FUCK BREAST CANCER. This movement is not only an emotional outlet, but it brings a different awareness to the table. Fuck breast cancer awareness month is every month in my book. This movement strives to bring awareness on bigger issues that our society tends to be unaware of about breast cancer such as the different causes and treatments that can either increase or decrease your risk of developing this disease. FUCK BREAST CANCER also addresses an equal awareness to both genders. A woman might be more prone to developing breast cancer than a man; however, cancer doesn’t favor one gender over another when taking a life. Whether it’s your uncle, mom, grandma, dad, cousin, nephew—FUCK BREAST CANCER excludes no one.

Card Idea

Something is happening. With the common desire to explore Truth, Artists and Designers have created “Under the Influence,” an exhibition that begs its audience to question Truth as it pertains to behavior and identity in various aspects of society today.

This year also celebrates Ohio Dominican University's Centennial, a reminder of and homage to both the rich history behind us and the certainty of remarkable and revolutionary things to come. This is a show about change. This is a show about impact. This is a show about truth and its many faces. Come see what we’ve discovered.

Something is happening. The old lines are blurring and new ones are coming into focus. The rift between art and design is dissolving as it is between all fields. Today, ideas drive making over medium or subject. At Ohio Dominican University, we have been focusing on the idea of truth. In our pursuit of truth we have discovered many things.

Something is happening. The rift between art and design is dissolving. The world is becoming more interconnected by the second, dwindling the need for specialization. We, at Ohio Dominican University, have recognized this and embraced it through our focus on concept. We do not make images and words look good, we make them do good..

Everything has an effect. Everything is a cause. The Ohio Dominican University ART+DESIGN department has realized its place in this cycle between cause and effect. Art and design are outlets to observe and direct the outside world. It is not enough for us to make things look good when we can make them do good. This is a show about change. This is a show about impact. This is a show about truth and its many faces. Come see what we’ve discovered.
